Free Fill-in-the-Blank and Cloze Worksheet Maker

A fill-in-the-blank passage, often called a cloze activity, asks students to read for meaning and use context to work out each missing word. This free worksheet maker turns any passage you paste, up to 3,000 characters, into a printable cloze worksheet. Click words to make them blanks, put asterisks around them in the text, or let the tool blank every Nth word or every word from your own list. Add a mixed-up word bank, number the blanks, show a first-letter hint and choose same-length or word-length lines. Every PDF includes an answer key, and Practice lets the class type answers on screen and check them.

Make a fill-in-the-blank worksheet in 3 steps

  1. Paste your passage. Type or paste up to 3,000 characters, or tap a sample passage: Frog’s Busy Morning, How a Seed Grows or The Water Cycle. Give the worksheet a title.

  2. Choose the blanks. Click words in Your passage to turn them into blanks, or put *asterisks* around them in the text. Or pick Every Nth word (every 3rd to 12th word, skipping words with fewer than 4 letters) or Word list to blank the words you type.

  3. Print or practice. Press Download Printable PDF Set for the worksheet and an answer key in A4 or US Letter. Open Practice or Classroom Presentation Mode so students can type in the blanks and press Check: green is right, red needs another try.

Ways to use the Fill-in-the-Blank Worksheet Maker in class

  • Vocabulary in context

Paste a paragraph from your current unit and click this week’s vocabulary words to blank them. With the Word Bank on, students choose the word that fits each sentence, which checks that they understand the meaning and not only the spelling.

  • A quick cloze reading check

Choose Every Nth word and set it to 5 or 7 for a classic cloze passage. Words with fewer than 4 letters are skipped, so blanks land on meaningful words. Turn the Word Bank off for readers who are ready to use context alone.

  • Two levels from one passage

Print one copy with the Word Bank, First-letter hint and Match the word lines for students who need support, then switch to Same length lines with no hints for students ready for more challenge. The passage and blanks stay the same.

  • Whole-class practice on the board

Open Classroom Presentation Mode to show the passage large with the Word Bank above it. Students take turns typing an answer into a blank, then press Check to see which blanks are green and which are red. Show answers reveals every blank at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this fill-in-the-blank generator free?

Yes. It’s free with no sign-up and no watermark. Your passage stays in this browser: it’s saved on this device so it’s still there next time, and it isn’t uploaded to a server.

Does the worksheet come with an answer key?

Yes. Download Printable PDF Set creates one PDF with the student worksheet first and then the answer key, where every blank is filled in and highlighted on the same lines in the same places as the student copy.

Can I add a word bank?

Yes. Turn on Word Bank to print each answer once in a box above the passage, in mixed-up order so it never lists the answers in the order they appear. Press Shuffle Word Bank for a different order, or turn it off so students recall the words on their own.

How do I choose which words become blanks?

Three ways. Click words in Your passage, or put asterisks around them in the text, like *seed*; a starred phrase such as *New York* becomes one blank. Every Nth word blanks one word in every 3 to 12, and Word list blanks each word you type every place it appears in the passage.

How long can the passage be?

Up to 3,000 characters, not counting the asterisks that mark blanks, with up to 100 blanks. A long passage continues onto more pages, and each page shows its page number at the bottom.

How does Check decide if an answer is right?

Capital letters, accents, curly or straight apostrophes and punctuation typed at the start or end of a word don’t matter, so “Seed.” matches seed. The spelling itself has to match the word in the passage.
