Free Online Vocabulary Flashcard Maker for Elementary Teachers

Flashcards work because of active recall: every time a student tries to remember a word before flipping the card, that memory gets stronger than it would from simply rereading a list. This free flashcard maker turns any vocabulary list into interactive 3D cards in seconds, from sight words and spelling lists to science terms and ESL vocabulary. Each card can be read aloud with clear US English pronunciation from the text-to-speech voices built into your browser, so young readers and English learners hear the word as they see it. Shuffle the deck to keep practice honest, slow the voice down for beginners, and project the cards full screen for whole-class review.

Create flashcards in 3 simple steps

  1. Make your deck. Type or paste one card per line as “front - back” (for example, “habitat - the natural home of an animal”), or load a ready-made deck: Dolch sight words, animals and their sounds, or elementary science terms.

  2. Flip, listen and repeat. Students say the answer before they tap the card to flip it. Tap the speaker to hear the word in US English, turn on the slower voice for early readers, and shuffle the deck so nobody memorizes the order.

  3. Teach it to the whole class. Open Classroom Presentation Mode for giant cards on your smartboard, use the arrow keys to move through the deck, or copy a share link so students can practice the same deck on their Chromebooks.

Ways to use it in your classroom

  • Sight word warm-up on the board

Load the Dolch Sight Words Grade 1 deck and open Classroom Presentation Mode. The class reads each word together, then you press Space to flip the card and show a short sentence that uses it. Press S whenever you want the whole room to hear the word read aloud.

  • Quiz from definition to word

Turn on “Show the back first” for a science or social studies unit. Students see the definition, name the vocabulary word, then flip to check. Try it with the Elementary Science Terms deck, or paste your own list of “term - definition” lines for this week’s unit.

  • A listening center for early readers

Set up a Chromebook with headphones and turn on “Read cards aloud automatically” and “Slower voice.” Each card is spoken as it appears and again when it flips, so early readers and English learners can practice on their own and hear every word they see.

  • Send this week’s words home

Click Share Link and paste it into your class newsletter, learning platform or a note to families. The link carries the whole deck, so a parent or homeschool learner can open the same cards on any device and practice at home with no app and no sign-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this flashcard maker free?

Yes — completely free, with no limits on decks, no watermarks and no premium tier. Make as many flashcard sets as you like for your classroom or home.

Does it require logging in?

No. There are no accounts or sign-ups for teachers or students. Your deck is saved in your own browser, and the Share Link carries the cards inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Can I use text-to-speech offline?

It depends on your device. The speaker uses the voices built into your browser and operating system. Voices installed on the device, such as most voices on iPad, Mac and Windows, keep working offline once the page is open. Chrome’s “Google” voices are online voices, so an offline Chromebook may stay silent or switch to a basic built-in voice.

How do I make flashcards from my own word list?

Type or paste one card per line with a spaced dash between the sides, like “erosion - when wind or water carries soil away.” A tab or an equals sign works too, so you can paste two columns straight from a spreadsheet. The back is optional for plain sight words, and hyphenated words like “ice-cream” stay whole. A deck holds up to 200 cards.

Can I print these flashcards?

Not from this tool — the flashcards are made for screens, either projected in Classroom Presentation Mode or opened on student devices with a share link. If you want paper practice with the same words, paste your list into the Word Search, Word Scramble or Bingo Card generators, which all download printable PDFs.

Will my flashcard deck still be there tomorrow?

Yes, on the same device and browser. Your deck and your voice settings are saved in the browser, so they’re waiting when you come back. Clearing your browser data removes them, and they don’t follow you to another computer — use Share Link to move a deck between devices, or save a file from the site’s Backup page.
