Free Printable Word Search Maker for Teachers
Word searches are a classroom favorite for good reason: they build vocabulary, spelling and visual scanning skills while feeling like a game. This free word search maker turns any list — spelling words, science terms, sight words or holiday themes — into a printable puzzle in seconds. Every puzzle comes with an answer key, works on Chromebooks and iPads, and never asks you to sign up.
Make a word search in 3 steps
Enter your words. Type or paste your vocabulary list with one word per line, and give the puzzle a title. Spaces and punctuation are removed automatically, so “ice cream” becomes ICECREAM.
Choose a size and generate. Pick Small (10×10) for younger students, or Medium (12×12) or Large (15×15) for longer lists, then click Generate Puzzle. Words run across, down and diagonally; turn on backwards words for an extra challenge.
Print or play together. Download the printable PDF — page one has the puzzle, the word list and Name and Date lines, page two is the answer key — or open Classroom Presentation Mode and solve it as a class on the board.
Ways to use it in your classroom
Monday spelling list practice
Paste this week’s spelling words, give the puzzle a title like “Week 12 Spelling,” and download the PDF. The student page has Name and Date lines, so it slides right into morning work or homework folders, and page two is the answer key for quick checking.
Two levels from one list
Differentiate without retyping anything. Generate a Small 10×10 puzzle with backwards words off for students who need support and download it, then switch to Large 15×15 with “Include backwards words” on and download a second version for students ready for a challenge.
Whole-class hunt on the smartboard
Open Classroom Presentation Mode and invite students up to find a word. Tap the word in the list when they spot it: it’s crossed off, highlighted in the grid, and the counter shows how many are found. Click “Show all answers” at the end to review any words that were missed.
Early finishers and sub folders
Make a few puzzles from your current unit vocabulary and keep the printouts in an early-finisher bin or your substitute folder. Because every PDF includes its own answer key, a sub or classroom helper can check finished puzzles without asking you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many words fit in a word search?
As a rule of thumb, use up to about 12 words for a Small 10×10 grid, 18 for Medium and 25 for Large. Each word must fit across the grid, so a 10×10 puzzle takes words of up to 10 letters. If a word can’t be placed, the generator tells you, so you can pick a larger size or trim the list.
Can the random letters spell inappropriate words?
The generator checks every puzzle for common inappropriate words hidden in the filler letters and reshuffles until the grid is clean. It also checks that each of your words (three letters or longer) appears only once, so there’s exactly one right answer for each.
Can I make puzzles with diagonal or backwards words?
Yes. Words run across, down and diagonally, and you can turn on backwards words for students who want a challenge. Leave backwards words off for early readers so every word reads forwards.
Can I print my word search on US Letter paper?
Yes. Choose A4 or US Letter under “Paper size (PDF)” before you download. Your choice is remembered and shared with the other printable generators on FreeClassTool, so worksheets, bingo cards and tracing pages all come out on the same paper without changing the setting each time.
Can I make different versions of the same puzzle?
Yes. Click Generate Puzzle again to hide the same words in a new arrangement, then download that version too. Each PDF has its own answer key, so you can hand neighbors different puzzles and keep every key matched to the right version. In Presentation Mode, the New puzzle button does the same thing.
Is my word list saved if I close the page?
Your title, word list and settings are saved in your browser, so they’re ready the next time you open the tool on the same device. The letter grid itself is created fresh each time, so if you want to keep a particular puzzle and its answer key, download the PDF before you leave.
