Letter grades
Grades use the percent as shown, so a paper that rounds up to 90% gets the 90% grade. Turn on 1 decimal for a stricter cut.
The grading chart prints all 21 rows for 20 questions in up to four columns per page, with the grade scale at the top. The 10/20/25/50 set is one PDF with a page for each, using the same points, rounding and scale.
How to Use the Quick Grade Calculator
Grading a stack of tests goes faster when you never have to divide. Set how many questions are on the paper, then type the number wrong (or the number right) and the percent and letter grade appear in giant numbers. Press Enter and the box clears for the next paper, while a running list counts the papers and shows the class average. Below it, a full grading chart lists every score from 0 wrong to all wrong. Pick a grade scale, allow half points, choose how percents round, and print the chart as a PDF. It runs free in your browser, with no sign-up.
Grade a stack of papers in 3 steps
Set up the paper. Enter the number of questions (1 to 200) and, if each question is worth more than one point, set Points per question. Turn on Half points for partial credit, and choose Round to whole % or 1 decimal.
Pick a grade scale. Choose A–F (90/80/70/60), A–F with +/−, Pass/Fail 70, the 4-point scale or Custom, where you type your own grades and cut-offs. Turn off Show grades if you only want percents.
Type, Enter, next paper. Type the number wrong (or switch Look up by to Number right) and press Enter. The percent and grade show big, the paper joins the list, and the box clears for the next one. Tap any row in the chart to show it big too.
Ways to use the Quick Grade Calculator
Grading a stack of tests fast
Mark each paper, then type the number wrong and press Enter. The percent and grade show in big numbers, so you can copy them onto the paper at a glance, and the box clears for the next test. Papers graded and the class average update as you go.
Partial credit on open-ended questions
Turn on Half points when some answers earn half credit. The chart then steps by 0.5 wrong, and the box takes entries like 2.5, so a paper with two wrong answers and one half-right answer gets its exact percent.
A chart for the grading folder
Print chart for 10/20/25/50 questions gives you a page for each common quiz length with your grade scale at the top. Keep the set in your grading folder or tape a page inside a binder for days when you grade away from a screen.
Matching your school’s grading scale
Choose Custom and type your school’s grades and cut-offs, such as an E instead of an F or an A at 94%. The chart, the big display and the PDF all use your scale, and it stays saved in this browser for the next stack of papers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the percent calculated and rounded?
The percent is the number right divided by the number of questions, times 100. Round to whole % rounds to the nearest whole percent and 1 decimal rounds to the nearest tenth, with halves rounding up, so 17.5 out of 20 shows 87.5% or 88%. Points per question changes the Score column, not the percent.
Are student names or scores saved anywhere?
The tool never asks for names. The list of graded papers keeps only scores, percents and grades, and it clears when you reload the page. Your settings (number of questions, points, rounding and grade scale) are saved in this browser so they are ready next time.
What is on the printable grading chart?
Download Grading Chart PDF prints every row for your number of questions, with Wrong, Score, percent and grade columns, in up to four columns per page and the grade scale at the top. A 100-question chart fits on one page. Print chart for 10/20/25/50 questions makes one PDF with a page for each length, on US Letter or A4.
Can I type the number right instead of the number wrong?
Yes. Switch Look up by to Number right and type how many questions the student got right. The tool works out the number wrong, the percent and the grade the same way, and the setting is saved for next time.
Why does 89.5% get an A on the A–F scale?
Grades use the percent as it is shown. With Round to whole %, 89.5% rounds up to 90%, which meets the 90% cut-off for an A. If you want 89.5% to stay a B, choose 1 decimal so the chart shows 89.5% and grades it against the cut-offs as is.
How do custom grade cut-offs work?
Each grade starts at its lowest percent, and the last grade covers everything below the one above it. You can have 2 to 12 grades with labels up to 8 characters, and cut-offs from 0 to 100 with one decimal at most. Each cut-off must be lower than the one above it, or the tool shows what to fix.
