How to Use the Rubric Maker
This rubric maker builds a grid rubric with 2 to 8 criteria and 3 to 5 performance levels. Each level has a name and a point value, starting at 4 Exceeds, 3 Meets, 2 Approaching and 1 Beginning, and every cell is a descriptor you can edit. Start from a Writing, Oral Presentation, Group Project, Science Lab Report or Art Project template, or a Blank Rubric. The same criteria also print as a single-point rubric or a student checklist with "I can" boxes. Add a Score column and total, a Name, Date and Assignment line, and a teacher comments box. It runs free in your browser, with no sign-up.
Make a rubric in 3 steps
Start from a template. Pick Writing, Oral Presentation, Group Project, Science Lab Report, Art Project or Blank Rubric. Loading a template replaces the title, levels and criteria, and Undo brings your last rubric back.
Edit the criteria and levels. Type in any cell. Rename a level or change its points, press Add criterion or Add level, use the arrows to reorder rows, and Reverse level order to list the lowest level first.
Choose a type and print. Pick Grid rubric, Single-point or Student checklist, turn the Score column, Total line, Name, Date and Assignment line and Teacher comments box on or off, then press Download PDF.
Ways to use the Rubric Maker in class
Show the rubric before students start
Open Classroom Presentation Mode when you introduce an assignment. Tap a row or press the down arrow to highlight one criterion at a time while the rest of the rubric fades, so the class can talk through what each level looks like before anyone begins.
Hand out a checklist for self-checks
Switch the Type to Student checklist and print a copy for each student. Every criterion becomes an "I can" line with a box to tick, so students can check their own work before they turn it in, and you can still grade with the grid version of the same rubric.
Give written feedback with a single-point rubric
Choose Single-point to print each criterion with its goal in the middle column. Write what still needs work in the Concerns column and what went beyond the goal in the Advanced column, then add a note in the Teacher comments box.
Keep one rubric per project
Save a rubric for each big project of the year, such as a lab report, a group project and an art piece. My saved rubrics holds up to 5 in this browser, so you can open last unit’s rubric, change a few cells and print it again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will long descriptors fit in the boxes?
The rubric always prints on one page. The text gets smaller until every cell fits, down to a smallest size. If a cell still has too much text, it is cut off with "..." and a warning in the preview names the cell, so you can shorten it, remove a criterion or try the other orientation.
What is a single-point rubric?
A single-point rubric lists only the goal for each criterion in the middle column, with an empty Concerns column on the left and an empty Advanced column on the right for your written feedback. Choose Single-point under Type to print your criteria this way, with an optional Score box on each row.
Can I save more than one rubric?
Yes. The rubric you are working on is kept in this browser automatically. Press Save rubric to keep a copy in My saved rubrics, which holds up to 5. Open switches to a saved rubric, Save changes updates it, Save as new makes a copy and Delete removes one.
When does the rubric print in landscape?
With Orientation set to Auto, a grid rubric with 4 or 5 levels prints in landscape and everything else prints in portrait. Choose Portrait or Landscape to pick it yourself. The preview shows the page in the orientation and paper size it will print.
How is the total calculated?
On a grid rubric, each criterion is worth the points of its highest level, so the Total line shows that number times the number of criteria. On a single-point rubric, set Points per criterion instead. The Total line only appears when Points and Score column is on.
Can I print a blank rubric to fill in by hand?
Yes. Choose the Blank Rubric template to start with empty criteria and descriptors, or clear any cells you want to leave open. Empty cells print as blank boxes, and an empty Assignment box prints as a line to write on.
