How to Use the Graph Paper Generator

This generator makes one page of graph paper as a PDF for US Letter or A4. Choose a square grid, a dot grid, isometric dots for 3D drawings, a coordinate plane or a page of number lines. Squares come in 5 mm, 1 cm, 1/4 in, 1/2 in and 1 in, and the page only holds whole squares, centered inside the margins. You can pick light gray, light blue or black lines, three line weights, a bold line every 5th or 10th square, and add a title and a Name and Date line. The preview shows exactly what prints. It runs free in your browser, with no sign-up.

Make graph paper in 3 steps

  1. Pick a paper type. Choose Square grid, Dot grid, Isometric dots, Coordinate plane or Number lines. For a grid, pick the square size or dot spacing; for a coordinate plane, pick First quadrant or Four quadrants and how far each axis goes.

  2. Set the look of the page. Choose the line color, line weight, margins, Portrait or Landscape, and US Letter or A4. Turn on Bold line every 5th or 10th line if you like, and type an optional title or turn on the Name and Date line.

  3. Download or project it. Press Download PDF and print at 100% (Actual size) so the squares keep their true size. Press Classroom Presentation Mode to show the same grid on the big screen, where you can tap a coordinate plane to plot points.

Ways to use the Graph Paper Generator in class

  • Plot points together on the board

Choose Coordinate plane and open Classroom Presentation Mode. Call out an ordered pair and have a student tap the grid point. Turn off Show coordinates when you want the class to name a point before you reveal it, and press Clear points to start the next round.

  • Area and perimeter on square grids

Print 1 cm or 1/2 in squares and have students draw rectangles with a given area, then count the squares and the edges around them. A bold line every 5th square makes larger shapes quicker to count.

  • Isometric drawings of cube buildings

Print Isometric dots and have students build a small shape from cubes, then draw it by joining the dots. The dots are an even distance apart in three directions, so the edges of each cube line up.

  • Number line practice pages

Choose Number lines, set Start at to a negative number and Count by to 1s, 2s, 5s or 10s. For a printable number line from -10 to 10, set Start at to -10, Count by to 1s and Jumps on each line to 20. Turn off Numbers for blank ticks that students fill in, or keep them on for adding and subtracting with jumps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What square sizes can I print?

Square grids, dot grids and isometric dots come in 5 mm, 1 cm, 1/4 in, 1/2 in and 1 in. The page holds as many whole squares as fit inside the margins, and the preview caption tells you how many, such as 30 × 40 squares on US Letter with 1/4 in squares and Medium margins.

How do I make a coordinate plane worksheet?

Choose Coordinate plane. It starts with Four quadrants and both axes up to 10, the classic coordinate grid from -10 to 10. You can also pick First quadrant, or set x-axis up to and y-axis up to anywhere from 2 to 30. Pick 1, 2 or 4 planes per page and how often the axes are numbered. The squares grow or shrink to fit the space, and you can turn off Numbers for blank axes.

Will the squares print at the right size?

The PDF is drawn in exact millimeters, so a 1/4 in square is 6.35 mm. Print at 100% or Actual size. If your print dialog is set to Fit to page or Shrink to fit, the printer may scale the whole page down a little.

Can I print dot paper instead of lines?

Yes. Dot grid puts a dot at every corner of the squares, and Bigger dot every 5th or 10th dot adds larger guide dots. Isometric dots shifts every other row half a step, so the dots form triangles for 3D drawings.

Can I put several coordinate planes on one page?

Yes. Set Planes per page to 2 or 4. Two planes stack on a portrait page and sit side by side on a landscape page, and four planes make a 2 by 2 layout. Each plane keeps the axis range, numbers and arrowheads you chose.

Does it remember my settings?

Yes. Your choices are saved in this browser and come back the next time you open the tool. The paper size is shared with the other printables on the site. Points plotted in presentation mode are not saved. Press Reset options to go back to the starting settings.
