A Classroom Hangman Game Without the Gallows
Hangman is a quick way to practice spelling and vocabulary: students think about which letters a word is likely to have, sound out patterns and use the blanks to narrow down the answer. This version keeps the classic game and leaves out the gallows. Instead, a bunch of balloons floats beside the word, and each wrong guess pops one balloon. Type your own spelling or vocabulary list with optional hints, pick a starter list, or type a secret word students can’t see. Students guess by tapping the on-screen letters or typing on a keyboard, and a simple tally counts words solved and missed.
Play classroom hangman in 3 steps
Choose your words. Type one word or short phrase per line, with an optional hint after a dash (“planet - It orbits the sun.”), or tap a starter list: Animals, CVC Words (K–1) or Science Words. Or switch to Teacher picks secretly and type a word that shows only as dots.
Set the balloons. Pick how many wrong guesses are allowed, from 4 to 10 (6 by default). That is how many balloons the bunch starts with, and each wrong guess pops one. Choose uppercase or lowercase letters and turn the sounds on or off.
Play together. Students guess letters on the on-screen keyboard or a real keyboard. Tap Hint to show the hint, Reveal word to end a round, and Next word for a new one. Classroom Presentation Mode shows big tiles and keys on the projector.
Ways to use the hangman game in class
Weekly spelling review
Paste this week’s spelling list and press Next word. Words come up in random order with no repeats until every word has been played, then the button changes to Start the list again. The Word counter at the top shows how far through the list the class is.
Vocabulary with context clues
Add a short definition after each word, like “habitat - The place where an animal lives.” Students try the letters first, and when they get stuck, tap Hint to show the clue. Using a hint never costs a balloon.
A secret word from the teacher
Switch to Teacher picks secretly to type a word on the spot, such as a character from a read-aloud or a word from the morning message. It shows only as dots while you type, so the class can watch the board while you set it up.
Team rounds on the smartboard
Open Classroom Presentation Mode and let teams take turns choosing a letter. The Solved and Missed tally keeps count for the whole class, and Reset score clears it for the next group.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this hangman game free?
Yes. It’s free with no sign-up and no limit on how many games you play. Your word list and settings are saved in this browser, so they’re still there the next time you open the page on the same device.
Why balloons instead of a hanging figure?
The game works the same way as classic hangman, but each wrong guess pops a balloon instead of adding to a gallows drawing. That keeps the game friendly for young students while the counting of wrong guesses stays exactly the same.
Can I use my own spelling or vocabulary words?
Yes. Type or paste up to 100 words or short phrases, one per line. Each needs 2 to 20 letters and up to 30 characters. Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes appear on their own, so students only guess the letters.
How many wrong guesses do students get?
You choose from 4 to 10, with 6 as the default. The bunch starts with that many balloons and one pops for each wrong guess. If you change the number during a word, the new number starts with the next word.
Can students type their guesses on a keyboard?
Yes. Pressing a letter key guesses that letter, the same as tapping it on the screen. After a round ends, Enter moves on to the next word (or to a new secret word), and Esc leaves Classroom Presentation Mode. Letters already guessed are marked green if they are in the word and crossed out if they are not.
Is the score saved?
The Solved and Missed tally lasts until you reload the page or press Reset score. Reveal word counts the word as missed, while Next word in the middle of a round skips it without changing the score. Your word list and settings are saved in this browser.
