How to Use the Interactive Place Value Chart

A place value chart puts each digit of a number in its own column, so students can see what every digit is worth. Pick a chart from Ones to hundreds up to Millions to thousandths, then type a number or press Random number. Each digit lands in its column, colored by period: millions, thousands, ones and decimals. Below the chart you see the number in standard form, expanded form and word form. Tap a digit to see what it is worth, or use the + and − buttons to add or take away one in a column and watch the regrouping. It runs free in your browser, with no sign-up.

Use the place value chart in 3 steps

  1. Pick a chart and a number. Choose a chart such as Ones to thousands or Decimals: tenths & hundredths. Type a number with or without commas and press Show in chart, or press Random number for a new one that fits the chart.

  2. Explore the digits. Tap any digit to read its place and value, or turn on Digit values to show every value under its column. Press + or − on a column to add or take away one, and the message names each trade, such as 10 ones → 1 ten.

  3. Practice, project or print. Press Hide next to the standard, expanded or word form, or press Hide a digit for a "What's missing?" round. Open Classroom Presentation Mode for the big screen, or download a blank chart or a practice sheet with an answer key as a PDF.

Ways to use the Place Value Chart in class

  • Read the chart warm-up

Press Hide next to the standard form, expanded form and word form, then press Random number. Students read the digits in the chart and write the number in all three forms on their whiteboards. Press Show on each form to check the answers together.

  • What is missing?

Press Hide a digit to cover one column with a question mark. Students use the word form or the expanded form as a clue to name the hidden digit and its value. Tap the question mark or press Reveal digit to check, then press Hide a digit again for another round.

  • Count up and regroup

Press Start at 0, then have students take turns pressing + on the ones column. When the ones reach 9, ask what will happen next, then press + and watch 10 ones regroup into 1 ten. Try the same with − to show trading 1 ten for 10 ones.

  • Decimal place value practice

Choose Decimals: tenths & hundredths and type a number such as 3.45. Turn on Digit values to show that the 4 is worth 0.4 and the 5 is worth 0.05. Print a practice sheet in word form so students turn words like three and forty-five hundredths into digits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which place value charts can I choose?

There are seven: Ones to hundreds, Ones to thousands, Ones to hundred thousands, Ones to millions, Decimals: tenths & hundredths (hundreds to hundredths), Decimals: thousandths (thousands to thousandths) and Millions to thousandths, which shows all ten places.

How do the + and − buttons show regrouping?

Each column has a + button above it and a − button below it. Adding one to a column that already holds 9 regroups: 10 ones become 1 ten, and the columns that changed light up. Taking away from a column that holds 0 trades one from the next place up, such as 1 ten → 10 ones. The message under the chart names every trade.

What is on the printable PDFs?

Download Blank Chart PDF prints the chart you picked with empty rows of boxes and Name and Date lines. Download Practice Sheet PDF lists 1 to 20 random numbers for students to write in the chart, given in standard form, word form, expanded form or a mix, and adds an answer key. Each PDF prints on US Letter or A4 paper.

Why can a number not be shown on the chart I picked?

Each chart has a largest number and a smallest place. The Ones to thousands chart goes up to 9,999, and whole-number charts do not show decimals. If a typed number does not fit, a message says why, so you can pick a bigger chart or a decimals chart.

How does the word form read decimals?

The word form reads the whole number, then "and", then the decimal part named by its last place. For example, 45.27 reads forty-five and twenty-seven hundredths. A number typed as 2.50 keeps its hundredths digit, so it reads two and fifty hundredths.

Does the chart remember my settings?

Yes. The chart you picked, the number, the Hide and Digit values choices, the expanded form style, sound and the practice sheet options are saved in this browser. A hidden digit is not saved. Use the Backup page to move your settings to another browser.
