Free Sight Words Practice Tool for Pre-K to Grade 3

Most schools hand teachers their own sight word list, so this tool is built around My list: paste your school’s words, one per line, and they are saved in this browser. Or pick one of our starter sets of common sight words for Pre-K, kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2 or grade 3. Flash shows one giant word at a time for whole-class drills on the projector. Check off lets you or a parent mark each word Knows it or Practice and see the words still to learn. Word wall puts every word on screen at once. Words can be read aloud in a US English voice, and you can print flashcards, a checklist and read, trace, write pages.

Practice sight words in 3 steps

  1. Choose your words. Pick My list and paste up to 200 words, one per line, or choose a starter set. Copy to My list turns a starter set into your own list you can edit.

  2. Pick a mode. Flash shows one word at a time with Next, Back, Shuffle and an optional auto-advance every 2, 3 or 5 seconds. Check off shows each word with Knows it and Practice buttons. Word wall shows all the words in a grid.

  3. Review and print. After Check off, the summary lists the words to practice, with Copy practice words and Practice these again. Under Printables, choose Flashcards, Checklist or Read, trace, write and press Download PDF.

Ways to use Sight Words Practice in class

  • Warm-up drill on the projector

Choose Flash, open Classroom Presentation Mode and let the class read each giant word together. Press Space or the right arrow for the next word, or set Auto-advance to 3 s and press Play so you can walk the room. Shuffle mixes the order so students read the words instead of remembering the sequence.

  • Quick one-on-one check

While the class works, sit with one student in Check off. Press Knows it or Practice for each word, or use the K and P keys. The summary shows how many words they know and which ones to practice, and Practice these again goes over just those words.

  • A word wall on the board

Word wall shows every word in the list at once. In presentation mode, call out a word and have a student come up and tap it. The word is read aloud and highlighted, and Clear highlights resets the wall for the next round.

  • Practice pages to send home

After Check off, turn on Only the Practice words under Printables and download Flashcards or a Read, trace, write page with just the words that student needs. The Checklist has check boxes for three dates, so you can track the same list over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my school’s sight word list?

Yes, and that is what My list is for. Paste or type your words, one per line (commas also work), up to 200 words. Repeats are skipped, and the list is saved on this device so it is there the next time you open the tool.

Where do the starter sets come from?

They are our own starter sets of common sight words: everyday words like the, and, said, look and because, grouped by level from Pre-K to grade 3. Each word appears in only one set. They are a place to start, not an official list, so use My list if your school has its own.

Is any student information saved?

No names or student details are asked for. Check off only saves which words were marked Knows it or Practice, for each list, in this browser. Start over clears those marks.

Can words be read aloud?

Yes. Hear it reads the current word in a US English voice from your browser, and Read each word aloud speaks every new word in Flash. Slower voice helps early readers. If the browser has no text-to-speech, the Hear it buttons are hidden and everything else still works.

What do the printables look like?

Flashcards print 8 per page with dashed cut lines and big lowercase words. The Checklist lists every word with a check box under three dates and a Words known total. Read, trace, write shows each word, the same word in dotted letters to trace, and a blank primary line to write it. All three print on A4 or US Letter.

Which keys work in Flash and Check off?

In Flash, Space or the right arrow shows the next word and the left arrow goes back; in presentation mode they work right away. In Check off, K marks Knows it and P marks Practice. Outside presentation mode the keys work after you click a button in the tool, and never while you type in My list.
