Behavior Clip Chart

A positive-first digital clip chart: move student clips up and down color levels, reset each day, and print level strips.

Classroom Management & SELGrades K–5

Up and Down arrow keys move this clip one level. Enter selects it so you can pick a level.

Our Clip Chart

Drag a clip to another level, or tap it and use Move up / Move down. A focused clip also moves with the Up and Down arrow keys.

Every day is a fresh start: reset each morning (or leave Start of day auto-reset on), celebrate moves up out loud, and keep conversations about moving down quiet and private. Initials, Numbers or Counts only keep names off a projected chart.

One class list for every name tool — Name Picker, Wheel of Names, Magic Hat, Group Maker, Duck Race, Clip Chart, Desk Name Plates, Award Certificates and Reward Chart. Saved on this device only; names are never uploaded. Move it to another computer

Clip positions follow each name, so renaming a student on the list starts their clip on Ready to Learn.

Chart levels

Start from a preset

Positive only keeps the levels from Ready to Learn up. Students on a level the preset doesn’t have go back to the start level.

Levels, top to bottom

7 of 8

Use 3 to 8 levels. New levels go at the bottom; the arrows move a level up or down the chart, and its clips go with it. Start is the level everyone begins on and goes back to on a reset.

Print level strips

Each level as a big colored strip with its name, to cut out and stack for a physical clip chart. Student names are not printed.

Free Digital Behavior Clip Chart

A clip chart is a column of color levels with a clip for each student. Everyone starts the day on Ready to Learn, and the clips move up for great choices and down when a student needs a reminder. This digital version uses your class list, so every student already has a clip. Drag a clip to another level, or tap it and press Move up or Move down. Rename, recolor, add or remove levels (3 to 8), or pick the Positive only preset. Turn on Start of day auto-reset so each morning is a fresh start, and switch to Initials, Numbers or Counts only to keep names off a projected chart.

How to use the digital clip chart

  1. Add your class. Type one student per line in the Class list box, or press Load Sample Class to try it out. The list is shared with the other name tools on this site and saved only in this browser. The chart shows up to 60 students.

  2. Set up your levels. Start from the Classic preset (seven levels) or Positive only (Ready to Learn and up). Type a new name for any level, tap its color square to recolor it, use the arrows to reorder, and choose which level is Start. Add level and the trash button keep the chart between 3 and 8 levels.

  3. Move clips during the day. Drag a clip to a new level, or tap it and press Move up, Move down or Move here. With a clip focused, the Up and Down arrow keys move it too. Open Classroom Presentation Mode for the board, and press Reset all to Ready to Learn (with Undo) to start fresh.

Ways to use the Behavior Clip Chart in class

  • A fresh start every morning

Leave Start of day auto-reset on, or press Reset all to Ready to Learn during morning meeting, so every student begins the day on the same level no matter how yesterday went.

  • Celebrate moves up out loud

When a student helps a classmate or works hard, move their clip up while the class watches. With Sounds on, every move up plays a sparkle, and a clip that reaches the top level gets a cheer and confetti.

  • Keep moves down private

Switch the projected chart to Initials, Numbers or Counts only, then use the Move students by name list on your own screen. Moves down make no sound, so a quiet word with the student can come first.

  • Build a paper clip chart

Press Download Level Strips (PDF) to print each level as a big colored strip, two to four per page, then cut them out and stack them on a wall or door for clothespins. Ink saver prints white strips with a colored outline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hide student names on the projected chart?

Yes. Above the chart, choose Initials or Numbers (each student’s line number on the class list) to show those on the clips instead of names, or Counts only to show just how many students are on each level. You can still move students by name in the Move students by name list, which never shows in Classroom Presentation Mode.

Does the chart reset by itself each day?

With Start of day auto-reset on, when a new day begins on your device’s date, every clip goes back to the start level as soon as the chart is open. An Undo button appears in case you didn’t want the reset. Today’s count of moves up also clears on a new day.

Are student names uploaded anywhere?

No. Names, levels and clip positions are saved in this browser on this device only. Student names are never printed on the level strips either. To move your chart to another computer, use the Backup page.

Can I use only positive levels?

Yes. Press the Positive only preset to keep just Outstanding!, Great Job, Good Day and Ready to Learn. Students who were on a level below Ready to Learn go back to it. Press Classic to bring all seven levels back.

Can I see how many times a student moved up today?

Turn on Show today’s moves up. Each clip then shows a small count of how many levels the student moved up today. Moves down are not counted, and Clear today’s count sets everyone back to zero.

What happens if two students have the same name?

Each one gets their own clip. The second one is labeled with (2) after the name, so you can tell them apart on the chart.
