How to Use the Reading Log Maker

This maker prints six kinds of reading logs: a Daily Minutes Log, a Weekly Log for Monday to Sunday, a Monthly Calendar Log for any month, a Book Log with stars to color, a Reading Response Log with sentence starters, and a Reading Bingo Challenge with 24 squares around a FREE center. Choose Grades K–2 for bigger rows and simpler fields, or Grades 3–8 for more columns. Add your own title, Name and Date lines, a teacher note such as a reading goal, and a Parent/Guardian signature line. The preview shows exactly what prints, on US Letter or A4. It runs free in your browser, with no sign-up.

Make a reading log in 3 steps

  1. Choose a log style and grade band. Pick Daily Minutes Log, Weekly Log, Monthly Calendar Log, Book Log, Reading Response Log or Reading Bingo Challenge, then choose Grades K–2 or Grades 3–8.

  2. Set the options. Type a title, set the Number of rows or Number of entries where the style has them, and pick the month for the calendar. Turn the Name and Date lines, Teacher note line and Parent/Guardian signature line on or off, and choose US Letter or A4.

  3. Download and print. Press Download PDF for a one-page log that matches the preview. Press Classroom Presentation Mode to show the page on the board while you explain how to fill it in.

Ways to use the Reading Log Maker in class

  • Send home a weekly reading log

Print the Weekly Log with the Parent/Guardian signature line on and a Teacher note line such as My reading goal: ______ minutes a day. Students fill in a row each day, add up the Weekly total and bring it back on Monday.

  • Track a month of reading on a calendar

Pick the month with the arrows or This month, then print the Monthly Calendar Log. Students color the square for each day they read, and in grades 3 to 8 they also write their minutes and fill in Days read and Total minutes at the bottom.

  • Run a class reading bingo challenge

Print the Reading Bingo Challenge for each student. In Classroom Presentation Mode you can tap squares on the board to color a class card as students share books, and Clear marks starts it over. Shuffle squares gives another class a different card.

  • Respond to reading with sentence starters

Use the Reading Response Log during independent reading. Students circle I noticed..., I wonder... or This reminds me of... and finish the thought on the lines. K–2 students can draw a picture first and then write.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of reading logs can I make?

There are six: a Daily Minutes Log with date, book title, pages, minutes and parent/guardian initials; a Weekly Log with a row for each day and a weekly total box; a Monthly Calendar Log; a Book Log with title, author, genre, a 5-star rating and dates; a Reading Response Log; and a Reading Bingo Challenge.

What changes in the K–2 version?

Grades K–2 uses bigger type, taller rows and fewer fields. For example, the Daily Minutes Log drops the Pages column, the Book Log keeps title, author, rating and date finished, and the Reading Response Log adds a Draw a picture box beside wide writing lines.

Can I add a reading goal or a parent signature?

Yes. Turn on Teacher note line and type your note, such as My reading goal: ______ minutes a day. It prints in a shaded line above the log. Turn on Parent/Guardian signature line to add a signature line at the bottom of the page.

How do I pick the month for the calendar log?

Choose Monthly Calendar Log, then use the Previous month and Next month arrows or press This month. The calendar starts on Sunday and places every day under the right weekday, with 4 to 6 week rows depending on the month.

How many rows can a reading log have?

The Daily Minutes Log has 3 to 15 rows for grades 3 to 8 and 3 to 10 for K–2. The Book Log has 3 to 11 rows, or 2 to 7 for K–2, and the Reading Response Log has 1 to 4 entries, or 1 to 3 for K–2. The limits keep every log on one page.

Are my settings saved?

Yes. Your log style, grade band, title, options, month, bingo order and the marks on the presentation board are saved in this browser, so they are still there next time. Nothing is uploaded, and the PDF always prints blank for students.
