Free Sentence Scramble Game and Worksheet Maker
Putting mixed-up words back in order asks students to think about how a sentence works: which word comes first, where the describing words go and how it ends. This sentence scramble shows one sentence at a time as word tiles in a mixed-up order. Students tap the words in order or drag them into the answer row, then press Check to see which words are in the right spot. Type your own sentences, one per line, or start with a ready-made set for K–1, grades 2–3 or grades 4–5. The same list prints as a worksheet with word boxes and writing lines, optional cut-and-paste pages and an answer key.
Play or print a sentence scramble in 3 steps
Add your sentences. Type one sentence per line, 3 to 15 words each, or tap a starter set: K–1 Sight-Word Sentences, Grade 2–3 Sentences or Grade 4–5 Sentences. Punctuation stays with its word, so “mat.” is one tile.
Build the sentence together. Students tap or drag the word tiles into the answer row. Check turns the words in the right spot green, Hint puts the next word in place, and Show answer fills in the whole sentence. Next sentence moves on without repeats until the list is used up.
Print a worksheet. Download Printable PDF Set gives you one PDF in A4 or US Letter: a worksheet with the words in boxes and lines to write each sentence, cut-and-paste pages when you turn them on, and an answer key.
Ways to use Sentence Scramble in class
Whole-class warm-up on the board
Open Classroom Presentation Mode and call students up one at a time to tap or drag the next word into the sentence. Press Check, and the words already in the right spot turn green. The arrow key moves to the next sentence, and the Solved and Skipped counts show how the class did.
Sight-word sentences for K–1
Tap the K–1 Sight-Word Sentences set, or type sentences built from this week’s sight words. Keep the capital letter and the period on the tiles so young readers can find the first and last word, then turn on Lowercase the first word when they’re ready for more challenge.
Cut-and-paste literacy center
Turn on Cut-and-paste pages and download the PDF set. Students cut out the word cards for each sentence, put them in order and glue them in the box underneath. The answer key in the same PDF lets a helper or the students themselves check the work.
Sentences from your read-aloud or unit
Type sentences from a book you’re reading or a science or social studies unit, one per line. Students rebuild each one on the board, then write it on the worksheet lines for morning work or homework, which brings the vocabulary back in context.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the sentence scramble free?
Yes. It’s free with no sign-up and no limit on how many sentences you play or worksheets you print. Your sentences and options are saved in this browser, so they’re still there next time.
Can the words ever show up in the right order?
No. The tiles are mixed so the sentence never starts out in its own order, even when it has the same word twice, and the mix tries to leave few words in their right spot. Two tiles that show the same word, like two “the” tiles, can go in either spot.
How do I remove the capital-letter and punctuation clues?
Turn on Lowercase the first word, so the first tile no longer starts with a capital (the word “I” stays a capital). Turn off Keep punctuation to take periods, commas, question marks and quotation marks off the tiles. Both options change the game and the printed worksheet.
How many sentences can I add?
Up to 30 sentences, each with 3 to 15 words and no word longer than 20 characters. If a line doesn’t fit those limits or repeats another sentence, a note under the list tells you which one was left out and why. The worksheet uses as many pages as your sentences need.
What does the Hint button do?
Hint keeps the words that are already right from the start of the sentence, sends the rest back to the word bank and puts the next correct word in place, shown in yellow. Press it again for the following word. If a hint finishes the sentence, it counts as solved.
Can students use a keyboard instead of dragging?
Yes. Every word tile is a button, so students can tab to a word and press Enter or Space to add it, or tap a word in the answer row to send it back. Enter checks the sentence and Backspace takes back the last word when no button is focused. In Classroom Presentation Mode, the right arrow key moves to the next sentence and Esc exits.
