Free Online Spelling Test and Practice Tool for Teachers

Weekly spelling lists are easier to practice when students can hear each word without waiting for an adult. Type your list once, one word per line with an optional example sentence, and this tool reads every word aloud in a US English voice from your browser. Students can practice on their own and see exactly which letters they got wrong, or you can give the whole class a test from the projector and let the voice do the reading. A Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check mode builds spelling from memory, and a printable PDF gives you a numbered answer sheet plus a word list for home practice.

Give a spelling test in 3 steps

  1. Enter this week’s words. Type up to 40 words, one per line. Add an example sentence after a spaced dash, like “friend - My friend sat next to me.”, or load a starter list for grade 2 or grade 5.

  2. Pick a mode. Practice reads a word, the student types it and presses Check. Class test reads each word to the whole room when you press Next word. Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check shows the word, hides it, then checks what the student writes.

  3. Review and print. After practice, students see their score and can press Practice missed words. At the end of a class test, Show all words lets students check their own papers. Download Printable PDF for the answer sheet and the word list.

Ways to use Spelling Test Practice in class

  • Friday spelling test from the projector

Open Classroom Presentation Mode, choose Class test and press Start test. Each word is read with its sentence while the big number shows which line to write on. In presentation mode, Space or the right arrow moves to the next word and R repeats it.

  • Independent practice at a center

Set up a Chromebook or tablet in Practice mode. Students listen, type each word and press Check, then use Practice missed words to go over only the words they got wrong. Scores are not saved, so the next student starts fresh.

  • Building spelling from memory

Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check shows each word to study and say aloud. When the student presses Cover, the word disappears and they write it from memory, then Check shows how close they were.

  • Sending the list home

Download Printable PDF to get a numbered answer sheet and a word list for home practice. Turn on Write it 3 times for copying columns, or Example sentences to print each sentence under its word.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the tool show which letters are wrong?

After Check, the student’s spelling is lined up letter by letter with the correct spelling. Wrong and extra letters are marked in red, a red gap shows where a letter is missing, and the letters to fix are highlighted in the correct word.

Do capital letters count?

Not by default, so “friend” and “Friend” are both correct. Turn on Capital letters count when capitals matter, for example to practice names of months like February.

What if my browser cannot read words aloud?

The tool shows a message instead of failing silently. In Practice, the Flash word button shows the word for two seconds and the example sentence appears with the word blanked out. In Class test, you can read each word yourself or press Show word.

Can I mix up the order of the words?

Yes. Turn on Shuffle order and the words come up in a new random order each time you start Practice, a class test or Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check. The printed answer sheet and word list keep your list order.

Can students see the word during a class test?

Only if you choose. Show word puts the current word on screen, and Class test: show each word on screen after can show it automatically after 5, 10 or 20 seconds. Entering presentation mode always hides the words first.

Is my spelling list saved?

Your list, title and settings are saved in this browser on this device only, and nothing is uploaded. Practice results stay on screen for the current session and are not saved.
