Free Random Group Generator for Classroom Collaboration
“Find a partner” can be the hardest minute of the day: the same friends pair up, and the same students are left waiting to be chosen. A random group generator takes that pressure away. Paste your class list, choose how many groups you need or how many students per group, and press one button — the names shuffle and land in balanced, color-coded teams in seconds. Because the computer does the choosing, groups feel fair, nobody is left out, and students learn to work with classmates they wouldn’t normally pick, which builds the collaboration and social skills K–5 classrooms aim for. You save time on every rotation, can still drag a student to another group when you know two classmates need space, and can keep specific pairs apart automatically. Name the teams with numbers, colors, animals or your own names, then show them full screen on the board so everyone can find their group.
Make random groups in 3 steps
Add your class. Type or paste student names, one per line, or press Load Sample Class to try it with 20 names. The list saves automatically in this browser and is shared with the other name tools; Clear All starts fresh (with an Undo).
Choose the groups. Split by number of groups (for example exactly 4 groups) or by students per group (for example teams of 3). Pick team names — Numbered, Colors, Animals or your own Custom names.
Generate and adjust. Press Generate Random Groups or the Spacebar. Drag any name to another group (or tap it, then tap the new group) to fine-tune, and press Reshuffle Groups for a new mix. Show the groups full screen with Classroom Presentation Mode, or download them as a PDF or image.
Ways to use the Group Maker in class
Lab partners and lab groups
For a science lab, split by Students per group: 2 for partner labs or 3–4 for lab tables. Add keep-apart pairs for students who shouldn’t share materials, and press Reshuffle Groups at the start of each unit so students work with new classmates while you still control the combinations that matter.
Literature circles by book title
Set Number of groups to match your novel sets, then choose Custom group names and type each book title, one per line, so every group card shows its book. After generating, drag a student to a different book if you know it’s a better fit, and project the groups so readers find their circle fast.
Station and center rotations
Make one group per station and pick Colors so groups become Red Team, Blue Team and so on — easy to match with colored bins or table signs. Your latest groups are saved in this browser, so the same rotation groups are waiting all week until you decide to reshuffle.
A new seating chart each quarter
Switch Mode to Seating Chart, set your rows and desks per row, and generate. Keep-apart pairs are never placed side by side or front-to-back. Tap a student, then a desk, to move anyone who needs a front seat, add a chart title like “Period 3 Science” and download a Printable PDF for your sub folder.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Random Group Generator free?
Yes. It’s 100% free with no sign-up, no limits on how many times you shuffle, and no downloads. It works in any modern browser on Chromebooks, iPads, laptops and interactive whiteboards.
Does it save my student list automatically?
Yes. Your class list, settings and latest groups are saved automatically in this browser, so they’re still there after a refresh or the next class period. Names stay on your device and are never uploaded.
Can I manually adjust students after auto-grouping?
Yes. Drag a student’s name onto another group (or another student to swap them), or tap a name and then tap where it should go. You can also add “keep apart” pairs so two students are never placed in the same group.
Can I make a random seating chart?
Yes. Switch Mode to Seating Chart, set the number of rows and desks per row (up to 10 of each), and press Generate Seating Chart. Students fill the desks from the front of the classroom, and empty desks stay at the back. If you have more students than desks, the tool tells you how many to add. Keep-apart pairs never sit side by side or front-to-back.
How do I print the groups or put them in my slides?
After you generate, press Printable PDF for a clean page on US Letter or A4 paper, with your optional chart title at the top — good for a sub folder or a bulletin board. Press Image (PNG) to save a picture of the groups that you can drop into slides or a class announcement. Both work for random groups and for seating charts.
What happens when my class doesn’t divide evenly?
Names are dealt out like cards, so group sizes never differ by more than one. Split 26 students into 4 groups and you get two groups of 7 and two of 6. Split 25 students by Students per group with 4 per group, and the tool makes 7 groups: four groups of 4 and three groups of 3.
