Free Online Classroom Timer for Teachers
A visual classroom timer helps students see exactly how much time is left, so transitions run smoothly and work time feels fair. This free online timer shows a big countdown inside a color ring that shrinks as time runs out — green, then yellow, then red — so even pre-readers can tell when to wrap up. It works in any browser on Chromebooks, iPads, laptops and interactive whiteboards, with nothing to install.
How to use the timer
Pick a time. Tap a quick preset from 1 to 30 minutes, or type any custom minutes and seconds and press Set time.
Start the countdown. Press Start, then Pause or Reset whenever you need to. Running long? Add a minute with one tap. Turn the gentle tick-tock sound on or off with the speaker button.
Put it on the big screen. Open Classroom Presentation Mode to fill the display with a giant ring and extra-large numbers that are readable from the back row, with ads hidden. Press Space to start or pause and Esc to exit. When time is up, a cheerful chime and confetti let everyone know.
Ways to use it in your classroom
Run smooth center rotations
Tap the 15 or 20 min preset at the start of each rotation and put the timer on the board. When the ring turns yellow, students know it’s time to finish up, and by red they should be cleaning their station. Press Reset to bring back the same time for the next group.
Beat the clock at clean-up
Choose the 3 min preset and challenge the class to have the room tidy before the ring empties. If the job really needs more time, Add 1 min extends the countdown without starting over. The confetti and chime at the end make finishing on time feel like a win.
Keep partner talk fair
For think-pair-share, set 1 minute and open Classroom Presentation Mode. Press Space to start Partner A’s turn, then press Space again after the chime to restart the same minute for Partner B. Both partners get exactly the same time, and nobody has to watch the clock.
Time quizzes and test sections
In middle and high school, type a custom time such as 42 minutes and press Set time. The countdown is based on the clock, so it stays accurate if you switch tabs to take attendance, and the time left shows in the browser tab title.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The countdown is based on the clock, not on screen updates, so it stays accurate even if you switch tabs or your computer is busy. The time left also shows in the browser tab title, and on supported devices the screen stays awake while the timer runs.
What can I use a classroom timer for?
Teachers use it for center rotations, independent reading, timed math facts, clean-up countdowns, brain breaks, test sections and turn-taking. A visible timer builds time-management skills and cuts down on “How much longer?” questions.
Can I set a custom time?
Yes. Type any number of minutes and seconds and press Set time, or tap a preset from 1 to 30 minutes. While the timer runs, Add 1 min gives the class a little extra time without starting over.
Can I make the timer completely silent?
The speaker button turns the tick-tock off, and that choice is saved for next time. The time’s-up chime still plays when the countdown ends, so if you need a fully silent finish — during a test, for example — turn down your device’s volume. The ring turning red and the “Time’s up!” message still show on screen.
How do I control the timer from across the room?
In Classroom Presentation Mode, press Space to start, pause or resume and R to reset, so a wireless keyboard works from anywhere in the room. Press Esc to leave presentation mode. The buttons also stay on screen in large sizes, which makes them easy to tap on an interactive whiteboard.
What happens when the countdown reaches zero?
The ring turns red, the screen shows “Time’s up!”, a cheerful chime plays and confetti falls. The browser tab title changes to “Time’s up!” too, so you’ll notice even from another tab. Press Restart to run the same time again, or Add 1 min to give the class one more minute right away.
