About the 40 Minute Timer
Forty minutes fits a shorter class period, a literacy or math block, or a test section with time to spare. The ring turns yellow at 20 minutes left and red for the final eight, so students can see the lesson’s shape: work while it’s green, check progress at yellow, wrap up at red.
Ways to use a 40 minute timer in class
Class periods
Show the whole lesson on the board so students know how much time is left without watching the wall clock.
Literacy or math blocks
Run four short centers inside the block, or one long work session with a share at the end.
Test sections
A visible 40 minutes for a unit test or practice section, with a pause for interruptions.
Art and maker projects
Long enough to make real progress, with red as the cue to start cleaning up supplies.
A 40-minute lesson plan, minute by minute
A predictable lesson shape helps students know what’s coming. Here’s one way to split 40 minutes; on a single run, the color changes land close to the switch points.
| Minutes | What happens |
|---|---|
| 0–5 | Do now: a warm-up question on the board. |
| 5–15 | Mini-lesson: model the new skill. |
| 15–20 | Guided practice: try one together. |
| 20–35 | Independent or partner practice. |
| 35–40 | Exit ticket and cleanup. |
- Plan it once, reuse it. The Lesson plan generator builds a plan with a timed outline you can match to these segments.
- Close with a check. Print a set from the Exit ticket generator for the last five minutes.
Four 8-minute centers or one long block
Forty minutes works two ways. For centers, run the 8 minute timer four times with short moves between rotations. For one long work session, keep this 40-minute timer on the board and use the colors as checkpoints: at yellow, groups check they’re halfway done; at red, they finish and tidy.
Want the timer next to the group list and a voice-level reminder? The Classroom screen dashboard puts them all on one projector screen. For more pacing ideas, see visual timers in the classroom.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn’t 40 minutes one of the quick presets?
The presets go up to 30 minutes, but this page opens the timer at 40:00 for you. On any timer page you can also type 40 into the Minutes field and press Set time.
Will the screen stay on for the full 40 minutes?
On most modern browsers, yes — while the timer runs it asks the device to keep the screen awake. If you switch away and come back, it asks again.
Can I give extra time at the end of a test?
Yes. Press Add 1 min as many times as you need, while the timer runs or while it’s paused. The ring adjusts to the new total so students can see the extra time.
