About the 20 Minute Timer

Twenty minutes is a solid block for a reading or writing workshop, a science lab step or a longer rotation. Projected on the board, the timer helps students keep an eye on the clock while you move around the room.

Ways to use a 20 minute timer in class

  • Writing workshop

Twenty minutes of independent writing time while you hold conferences.

  • Reading blocks

A longer read-to-self or book club block for older students.

  • Science labs

Time one step of a lab so every group moves on together.

  • Test review stations

Two twenty-minute rounds of review stations fit into many class periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?

Yes. It’s based on the clock, not on the page being visible, so it stays accurate in the background. The time left also shows in the tab title, and the fanfare plays when it reaches zero.

How do students know when time is almost up?

The ring turns yellow after half the time has passed and red for the last fifth — the final four minutes of twenty. Many teachers say “red means wrap up” so students know to finish their sentence or step.
