About the 3 Minute Timer

Three minutes fits activities that need a little more than a quick answer: a short quick-write, a partner reading turn or a station cleanup. The visual ring helps students pace themselves, and the browser tab shows the time left even if you switch to your slides.

Ways to use a 3 minute timer in class

  • Quick-writes

Three minutes of nonstop writing on a prompt. Tell students to keep the pencil moving until the fanfare plays.

  • Partner reading

Each partner reads aloud for three minutes, then they swap roles.

  • Station reset

Clean up and leave the station ready for the next group before the ring turns red.

  • Mini debates

One side makes its case for three minutes; reset and give the other side the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep my slides open while the timer runs?

Yes. The time left shows in the browser tab title, so you can switch to another tab and still see the countdown. The timer keeps running in the background and plays its fanfare at the end.

What do the ring colors mean?

Green means more than half of the time is left, yellow means it’s getting close, and red means the last fifth of the time — for three minutes, that’s the final 36 seconds.
