About the 8 Minute Timer
Eight minutes is a handy in-between length: longer than a quick task, short enough to keep a mini-lesson tight or fit four center rotations into a 40-minute block. The ring turns yellow at four minutes left and red for the last 1:36, so students know when to wrap up.
Ways to use an 8 minute timer in class
Mini-lessons
Keep direct teaching short and focused, then send students off to practice.
Quick center rotations
Eight-minute stations let every group visit four centers in one block.
Lab steps
Time one step of an experiment, like measuring or observing, so groups move on together.
Fact practice
A focused round of flashcards or a math facts game before moving to new material.
Four eight-minute rotations in a 40-minute block
If your literacy or math block is about 40 minutes, eight-minute rotations let every group visit four stations with time to move between them. Press Reset after each round and the timer is back at 8:00 for the next group.
| Minutes | What happens |
|---|---|
| 0–2 | Directions and groups on the board. |
| 2–10 | Rotation 1 (timer at 8:00). |
| 11–19 | Rotation 2, after a one-minute move. |
| 20–28 | Rotation 3. |
| 29–37 | Rotation 4. |
| 37–40 | Clean up and quick share. |
- Make the groups first. Use the Group maker to form four groups and keep chosen students apart.
- Station ideas. A Math facts game, Flashcards, a short reading task and a teacher table.
Keeping a mini-lesson to eight minutes
A visible timer keeps you honest, too. Start it when you begin teaching and plan for the colors: model the skill while it’s green, try one together at yellow, and when it turns red, give the directions for independent work.
Students benefit from seeing the plan. Put the steps on the Classroom screen dashboard next to a timer, or read more about pacing in visual timers in the classroom.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the 8 minute timer for several rotations in a row?
Yes. When time is up, press Restart for the next rotation, or Reset to set it back to 8:00 and start when everyone has moved. Reset always returns to the time you chose.
When does the ring change color for eight minutes?
It turns yellow at 4:00 left (halfway) and red at 1:36 left (the last fifth). That last red stretch is a good moment to start cleaning up a station.
Can I control it from across the room during centers?
In Classroom Presentation Mode, Space starts, pauses or resumes the timer and R resets it, so a wireless keyboard works from the teacher table. Press Esc to leave presentation mode.
