A Random Letter Generator Built for the Classroom
Pick a random letter for a category game, a letter of the day or a quick phonics warm-up. Choose uppercase, lowercase or both (like Bb), and draw from all 26 letters, the vowels, the consonants or your own custom set. Skip Q, X and Z when you want letters that are easy to find words for, draw up to five letters at once for word-building, and turn on No repeats so letters stay out until you press Start Over. Every letter comes from your browser’s cryptographically secure random generator, so each one in the set has the same chance.
Pick a letter in 3 steps
Choose your letters. Pick Uppercase, Lowercase or Both, then a letter set: All letters, Vowels, Consonants or Custom, where you type the exact letters to draw from.
Set the options. Draw 1 to 5 letters at once, turn on Skip Q, X and Z, No repeats, or Show a word that starts with it for a simple example word under each letter.
Pick and project. Press Pick a Letter and watch the letters flicker to a stop. With Dramatic finish on, the last letter slows down through its neighbors in the alphabet and pauses for a beat before the reveal. Classroom Presentation Mode fills the screen with ads hidden; Space or Enter draws again.
Ways to use the Random Letter Generator in class
Category game
Pick a letter with Skip Q, X and Z turned on, then give students a minute to write an animal, a food and a place that start with it. Pick again for the next round.
Letter of the day
Turn on No repeats and pick one letter each morning so every letter gets a turn before any comes back. Show a word that starts with it gives younger students a first example.
Phonics warm-ups
Use Custom with the letters your class has learned, or choose Vowels or Consonants. Students say the sound, name a word that starts with it, or write the letter in both cases.
Word-building challenge
Draw 3 to 5 letters at once and ask teams to build as many words as they can using those letters. Choose Both to practice matching uppercase and lowercase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the random letter generator truly random?
Yes. Each letter comes from the browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator with a method that avoids bias, so every letter in your set has the same chance. The flickering letters and the Dramatic finish build-up are only an animation — the result is decided first.
Can I pick letters without repeats?
Yes. Turn on No repeats. Every letter in a draw is different, and letters already drawn stay out of later draws until you press Start Over. The display shows how many letters are left, and Recent draws lists which ones are still to draw.
Can I choose which letters it picks from?
Yes. Choose All letters, Vowels (A, E, I, O, U) or Consonants, or pick Custom and type your own letters, such as the letters your class has learned so far. Spaces, commas and repeated letters are ignored.
Can I show uppercase and lowercase letters together?
Yes. Under Letter case, choose Both and every letter shows as a pair, like Bb. Uppercase and Lowercase show just one form. The case only changes the display, so it doesn’t affect which letters can be picked.
What does Show a word that starts with it do?
It adds one simple example word under each picked letter, such as Apple for A, Ball for B and X-ray for X. The words come from a short built-in list, one per letter. It is off until you turn it on.
How many letters can I pick at once?
Up to 5. Set How many letters and the button changes to Pick 2 Letters, Pick 3 Letters and so on. Without No repeats, the same letter can show up more than once in a draw.
