An Interactive Calendar Math Board for Morning Meeting

This free calendar math board puts the whole morning meeting calendar on your projector or smartboard. A big month calendar shows today highlighted, with Previous, Next and Today buttons. Three sentence strips read "Today is…", "Yesterday was…" and "Tomorrow will be…", and each stays hidden until you press Reveal, so students say the date first. Color the dates in an AB or ABC pattern of shapes and hide the shapes after today so the class predicts what comes next. Tap today’s weather to build a monthly bar graph, then read the season, the month number, the days in the month and how many days are left until the weekend.

Run calendar time in 3 steps

  1. Set up the calendar. Turn on Start week on Monday if your class calendar starts on Monday. Under Calendar pattern, pick AB or ABC and choose the shapes. Under Show on the board, turn the Sentence strips, Weather, Weather graph and Season & month on or off.

  2. Say it, then reveal it. Ask a student to read the date from the calendar and say "Today is…", then press Reveal to check. Do the same for yesterday and tomorrow, or press Reveal all. Read Aloud reveals the strips and reads them out loud, plus today’s weather once it is picked, in browsers that support speech.

  3. Log the weather and present. Tap Sunny, Cloudy, Rainy, Snowy, Windy or Foggy to save today’s weather and grow the bar graph. Open Classroom Presentation Mode to fill the screen with ads hidden, use the left and right arrow keys to change the month and press Esc to exit.

Ways to use the Morning Meeting Calendar in class

  • Calendar helper of the day

Give one student the calendar job each morning. They find today on the board, say the three sentences out loud and press Reveal after each one to check. The rest of the class gives a thumbs up when the revealed strip matches what the helper said.

  • Predict the next shape

Turn on Hide future patterns and ask the class which shape belongs on tomorrow. Students explain the rule, for example red circle, blue square, red circle, then a student taps the question mark to check. Switch from AB to ABC when the class is ready for a longer pattern.

  • Read the weather graph

After a few weeks of tapping the weather, ask which weather had the most days, how many more sunny days than rainy days there were and how many days were logged in all. The counts sit on top of each bar, and the line under the graph names the weather with the most days.

  • Calendar journals

Print the My calendar sheet for the month and have students fill in Today is, Yesterday was and Tomorrow will be, check today’s weather word, write the season and color today’s box on the small calendar. Print the Blank month calendar with Print the dates turned off so students write the numbers themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the calendar pattern work?

Pick AB to repeat two shapes or ABC to repeat three, choosing from a red circle, a blue square, a yellow triangle and a green star. The pattern starts again on the 1st of every month. Turn on Hide future patterns to hide every shape after today; tomorrow shows a question mark that you can tap to check the class prediction.

Where is the weather saved?

Only in this browser on this device, as one weather word per date, for up to 400 days. Tap the selected weather again to clear it. If you missed a day, pick its date under Weather log and set the weather that day. The graph shows the month on screen, and the Clear button under Weather log, named for that month, removes its days.

How does it decide the season?

Seasons are for the Northern Hemisphere. With Start dates, spring begins March 20, summer June 21, fall September 22 and winter December 21; the real equinox or solstice can be a day off. With Whole months, spring is March to May, summer June to August, fall September to November and winter December to February.

Can I print a calendar for any month?

Yes. Under Printables, pick Blank month calendar or My calendar sheet, then choose the month and year and press Download PDF. The blank calendar prints on one landscape page with a big box for every date. The preview shows the exact page, in US Letter or A4.

What does the board show on the weekend?

The calendar and the sentence strips work every day. On Saturday and Sunday the answer to How many days until the weekend? is It is the weekend!, and on weekdays it counts the days until Saturday, such as 1 day until Saturday on a Friday.

Does the board change to the next day by itself?

Yes. It uses the date on your device and checks it every 30 seconds and whenever you come back to the tab, so a board left open overnight moves to the new day. When the day changes, the strips hide again if Hide sentences until Reveal is on.
