About the Name Tracing Worksheets

A child’s own name is often the first word they learn to write, which makes it a natural place to start handwriting practice in pre-K and kindergarten. This page opens with a name tracing sheet ready to go: the name repeats across each row in dotted letters, a blank ruled line sits under every traced row for writing it alone, and the pattern fills the whole page. Type any name to change it. To make sheets for a whole class, choose My class list under Practice and paste your students’ names, one per line; each student gets their own page in the same PDF. The class list is the same one used by the Name Picker, Wheel of Names and the other name tools on FreeClassTool, and it stays on your device. Large lines suit pre-K and kindergarten; switch to Medium for grades 1 and 2, or to Cursive for older students.

Ways to use name tracing worksheets

  • The first week of school

Print a name page for every student before the first day, so each child has a personal handwriting task waiting at their seat.

  • A name practice center

Slide each page into a sheet protector and keep them in a center basket. Students trace their names with dry-erase markers and wipe them clean for the next round.

  • Model it on the board

Open Classroom Presentation Mode to show one name at a time on big primary lines while you model where each stroke starts. Press the arrow keys or Space to move to the next name.

  • Send one home

Families often ask how to help with handwriting. A page of their child’s own name, in the same letter style used at school, is an easy thing to send home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a name tracing page for every student at once?

Yes. Under Practice, choose My class list and type or paste the names, one per line, with “A full page for each entry” turned on. The PDF has one page per student, each with Name and Date lines at the top. You can enter up to 60 names.

Should children trace their name in capitals?

Children are usually taught to write their name with a capital first letter and lowercase letters after it, such as Emma rather than EMMA. Type the name the way you want it written; the worksheet traces exactly what you type.

Is my class list uploaded anywhere?

No. The worksheet is made in your browser, and the class list is saved only on this device. You can move it to another computer with the backup page.
