Free Printable Math Tests for Grades 1–5

This math test generator builds a complete, printable test for first through fifth grade: a multiple-choice part with A–D bubbles and a show-your-work part with computation, word problems and space to write. Pick the grade and the topics your class has covered — the list starts with topics commonly taught in that grade, such as facts within 20 and telling time in first grade, multiplication and fractions in third grade, or decimals and order of operations in fifth grade — and untick anything you haven’t taught yet. Questions come with figures where they help: analog clocks, shaded fraction bars and circles, shapes, and rectangles with labeled sides for perimeter and area. Every answer is calculated by the generator, every multiple-choice question has exactly one right answer, and the PDF comes with a matching answer key that shows the points for each question and the worked steps for word problems. Each test has a number, so you can print a second version for another class or get the same test back later.

Make a math test in 3 steps

  1. Choose the grade and topics. Pick Grade 1 to Grade 5, then tick the topics you want on the test. Select all and Clear all help when you only want one unit.

  2. Set up the test. Choose how many multiple-choice and show-your-work questions to include, the time allowed, and whether to show points. The live preview updates as you go; click New test for a different set of questions.

  3. Print it. Click Download PDF for the test followed by the answer key, or Answer key only. Choose US Letter or A4. Classroom Presentation Mode shows the pages on the board.

Ways to use it in your classroom

  • End-of-unit test in minutes

Untick everything except the topics from the unit you just finished, set 8 multiple-choice and 4 show-your-work questions, and print. The answer key shows the worked steps for word problems, so grading the written part is quick.

  • Two versions for nearby seats

Print the test, click New test and print again. Both versions cover the same topics with different numbers, and the test number in the footer tells you which answer key belongs to which paper.

  • Pre-test and post-test

Give a short test before a unit to see what students already know, and keep its test number. At the end of the unit, print a new test with the same settings and compare the scores.

  • Review on the board

Open Classroom Presentation Mode and go through a test page by page with the arrow keys, solving a few questions together before students try the printed version on their own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the tests aligned to a specific set of standards?

No claim of alignment is made. The topic list for each grade is a starting point based on what is commonly taught in that grade in US elementary schools, and you decide what goes on the test by ticking or unticking topics. Read the preview before you print, as you would with any test.

How are the points counted?

Each multiple-choice question is worth 1 point. In the show-your-work part, each lettered part of an exercise is worth 1 point, and a word problem is worth 1 point per step plus 1 for the answer. The total appears in the Score box, and the answer key lists the points for every question. Turn off Show points to leave them off the student pages.

Can I make two different versions of a test?

Yes. Click New test for another set of questions on the same topics, or type a different test number. The number is printed on every page, and the same number with the same settings always gives the same test, so you can come back for the answer key later.

What kinds of questions can a test include?

Depending on the grade: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (facts and multi-digit, including remainders), comparing numbers, place value and expanded form, number names, rounding, missing numbers, patterns, telling time on clock faces, elapsed time, coins and money, measurement conversions, shapes, perimeter, area and volume, fractions and decimals, order of operations, and one- and two-step word problems.

Are the multiple-choice answers believable?

The wrong answers come from common mistakes, such as forgetting to regroup, subtracting the smaller digit from the larger one, reading the hour hand as the next hour or adding the denominators of fractions. A wrong answer is never equal to the right one, so every question has exactly one correct choice.

Does it save my settings?

Your grade, topics, question counts, time and switches are saved in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere and no account is needed. Each visit starts with a new test number.
