About the Tangram Puzzles Online

A tangram is a square cut into seven pieces: two large triangles, a medium triangle, two small triangles, a square and a parallelogram. Every puzzle here asks students to use all seven to fill a gray outline, from simple shapes like the Square and the Big Triangle to pictures like the Cat, Rocket, Fish, Swan and Rabbit. Pieces turn 45° at a time, the parallelogram can flip over, and corners snap together so small hands on a tablet can still line things up. Each outline was built from a real arrangement of the seven pieces, so every puzzle can be solved, and the tool celebrates with a sound and confetti the moment the shape is full. Free build lets students invent their own pictures.

Ways to use tangram puzzles in class

  • Morning warm-up

Put one puzzle on the board as students come in. Whoever has an idea comes up and moves a piece, and the class decides together whether it brought the picture closer.

  • Talk about the pieces

Before solving, compare the pieces: two small triangles can be put together to make the square, the medium triangle or the parallelogram. Students who notice that solve puzzles faster.

  • Partner directions

One partner gives directions (which piece, which way to turn it, where it goes) and the other moves the pieces without pointing. It builds the language of position and turns.

  • Invent a picture

In Free build, students make their own picture with all seven pieces, give it a name, and describe it so a partner can rebuild it on another device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tangram puzzles are included?

There are 13: Square, Rectangle, Big Triangle, House, Cat, Sailboat, Arrow, Rocket, Fish, Candle, Swan, Robot and Rabbit, plus Free build. Every outline was made from a real arrangement of the seven pieces, so each one can be solved with 45° turns and the parallelogram flip.

What if my students get stuck?

Press Show Solution to draw the outline of every piece on the gray shape, then press it again to hide it. Reset Pieces puts all seven pieces back where they started. Any arrangement that fills the shape counts as solved, not only the one Show Solution draws.

Does this page change my pattern block mat?

No. This page opens in Tangrams mode, and your pattern blocks stay as you left them. The tangram pieces and the puzzle you picked are saved in this browser and shared with the Pattern Blocks & Tangrams page, so you can carry on there.
