About the Color by Number Printables

Color by number turns coloring into a reading and matching task: students find the number in a space, look it up in the color key and pick the right crayon. Here it works with every picture in the library, from dinosaurs and unicorns to space, animals, mandalas and the holidays, so you can match the page to your theme for the week. Color by number is already turned on. Each space gets one number, and the key under the picture shows the color and its name, so it doubles as color-word practice. Simple pictures have a few big spaces and only a handful of colors, which suits PreK through grade 1, while Detailed pictures have many small numbered spaces for grades 2 and up. Turn the switch off at any time to print the same picture as a plain coloring page.

Ways to use color by number pages

  • Number and color-word practice

Give younger students a Simple picture. Reading the numbers and the color names in the key practices both at once.

  • Quiet early-finisher work

Turn on Print several at once, pick a stack of pictures and keep the copies in a folder for students who finish early.

  • Following directions

Ask students to check the key before every color. A finished picture that matches the key shows they followed the directions.

  • Color by number on the board

Press Color on the Board and turn on Numbers. Students take turns tapping a space with the color its number asks for.

How the color by number pages work

  • One number per space. Every space you color gets a number. Small white parts like eye highlights stay blank.
  • A color key on every picture. The key under each picture lists its colors in order, with the color name next to each number.
  • Any picture, any size. Print 1, 2 or 4 pictures to a page on US Letter or A4, with Thin, Medium or Bold lines.
  • Plain or numbered. Switch Color by number off to print the same picture as a regular coloring page, for example as an answer check.
